Objective: Analyze vorticity parameters and explore the hemodynamic characteristics of left atrial appendage(LAA) in atrial fibrillation(AF) patients using transoesophageal echocardiography(TEE) by vector flow mapping (VFM).
Methods: 27 AF patients, mean age(51±11.50), were enrolled in this study. The maximum flow volume of vortex (Qmax, cm2/s), half-value area of vortes (S, cm2) and vortex intensity (Qmax/s, s-1) were measured at the base (I), intermediate (II) and protrude square (III). The results were compared with age and sex matched controls.
Results: Compared with control group, the LAA vortex configuration was loose, and velocity vector line was sparse. While vortex intensity were significantly weaker, and the vortex graphics were mainly appear in the LAA basal area. Qmax (6.49±15.73cm2/s vs 4.03±3.72cm2/s, P<0.05), S(0.60±1.17cm2 vs 0.14±0.10cm2, P <0.05) at I area were higher than controls, but Qmax/S(16.70±15.76 s-1 vs 30.63±18.84 s-1, P<0.05) was lower. Qmax (9.74±10.55cm2/s vs 5.12±5.15cm2/s, P<0.05)at (II) was also higher than controls. Rest of the vortex parameters at area (II) and (III) were not different from controls. (Figure 1)
Conclusions: Vortex parameters is helpful to evaluate LAA hemodynamic state, it could be used to explain the pathogenesis and to evaluate prognosis of AF.
